Ford BlueCruise Highway Driving Technology

Autopilot and driver-assist technologies are developing and improving daily. Ford has also released its hands-free level 2 advanced driver aid technology to keep up with the trend (ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System)). Ford BlueCruise is the name of this technology. What Does Hands-Free Driving Mean?

A Level 2 autonomous driving aid system is currently available on the market. This assists with lane changes, keeping the car in its lane, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. The driver must keep an eye on the road at all times, handle the steering wheel most of the time, and be ready to take control. This is still a long way from entirely autonomous driving (Level 4), but it is a step in the right direction.

 How Does Ford BlueCruise Work?

The BlueCruise enables if the car is in one of the hands-free blue zones (10,000 miles of approved roadways) and meets specific requirements. This means the driver can now release their hands from the steering wheel and hit the cruise control button.

However, it is crucial to make note of the fact that this system is not fully autonomous. At all times, the vehicle driver must be aware and ready to take control of the vehicle. Head and eye position sensors are present in BlueCruise to ensure that the driver always pays attention to the road. The BlueCruise system will automatically disconnect if the driver takes their eyes off the road for too long. It is also important to note that this system will not work on highways that do not have the Blue Zone’s visible lane markers.

Which Vehicles Have the Ford BlueCruise Hands-Free Driving Technology?

Currently, this technology is only available in the Ford Co-Pilot360™ Active 2.0 Prep Package-equipped 2021 Ford F-150 and 2021 Mustang Mach-E vehicles. However, after the technology is released over the air later this year, it will be available for all Ford vehicles model years 2021 and later.
